What Tar Is
Tar is not just a drug — it’s described as adaptive, predatory, and alive, functioning more like a living program or parasite than a simple chemical. It embeds itself in the host’s body and actively rewrites them at every level: physical, cognitive, and emotional
It doesn’t just suppress abilities; it inhibits, reprograms, and distorts memory. Victims often experience:
Intense physical pain and burning sensations in their veins
Flickering consciousness and glitching perceptions
Memory loss or implanted false memories
Rejection of normal nourishment (it can warp the body to reject food)
How It’s Used
By HATE and others in control: Tar is a weaponized tool, injected or pumped into constructs like Devlin to suppress powers and make them easier to manipulate. It’s not just about control — it’s about rewriting the subject into something usable.
As punishment or conditioning: For Devlin, Tar is forced into him against his will, often during restraint or interrogation. It’s used to destabilize his identity and reinforce ownership.
As a mutagenic “miracle” by rogue scientists: In the world, some factions whisper about Tar as a key to unlocking forbidden parts of the mind, though in reality, it’s corrosive and destructive.
Tar: The Substance That Shouldn’t Exist
In the world of High Tech Low Life, there’s one name whispered more than any other in the underlayers of society. Tar.
Not a drug. Not a cure. Not even just a chemical. Tar is something else entirely. Some say it’s alive. Some call it a parasite. Others think of it as a glitch in biology itself.
What does it do? No one can agree. Some claim it makes you stronger, sharper, even invincible. Others say it steals your memories, rewrites your body, and leaves you hollow. What’s undeniable is this: once Tar is in you, it changes you forever.
Is it salvation? A weapon? Or just the perfect leash for those who want control? That depends on who you ask—because Tar doesn’t give answers. It takes them.
And in High Tech Low Life, Tar is more than just background noise. It’s a shadow that follows, a poison that tempts, and a question with no safe answer.
